Who are we
The Jewellery Workshop Maidstone was founded in 1974 by Geoff Kewell, first in his house in Walderslade offering retail and trade jewellery repairs before having to move to bigger premises when his daughter was born.
Geoff moved the business to different locations within Maidstone whilst the business was growing before finally settling in to the current location in Gabriels Hill. The Jewellery Workshop has always been a specialist jewellers offering high quality repairs and commissions to both the public, and trade. In the late 90's we were so busy with our retail shop with both jewellery repairs, and commissions that we ceased to continue with the trade side of the business.
June Kewell joined the company circa 1986 and became the front of the Jewellery Workshop, and the person you would most likely see at the counter. Many customers still today refer to June as "The Scottish Lady" June's main skills that she brought to the business were the keen eye for great products, many which are still available today, such as our Tianguis Jackson range, and the ability to sell our skills of making and repairing jewellery.
Jason joined the business in 1994 after working for P J Steel in Chatham for 6 years and is still our resident Goldsmith on the premises today. Jason is the person that you will usually see working away behind the counter doing all our jewellery repairs and commissions. He is the longest serving member of staff, completing his 20th year in 2014. Jason is a co-owner of the business.
Donna joined the business in 1999 and is responsible for purchasing the beautiful jewellery that we sell. She is more likely to be the person handling all of your special requests and orders and is the go to person in the business to locate that special or unusual piece of jewellery. Donna is our senior member of staff in the shop, and although we do not have a management structure in the business, in any other business she would be classed as the manageress.
Geoff & June Kewell retired in 2002 moving to Scotland leaving a few vacant positions to be filled.
Richard & Natalie Daniel joined the business in September 2002.
Richard had worked for small Jewellery chains in managerial roles, until the rapid aggressive expansion of the Leslie Davis group in the 1980's took over the Zales chain where he worked. Now working for a multinational jewellery chain (now called Signet) he was moved around the company to turn around underperforming branches. By the end of Richard's Signet career he was now running a flag ship branch in Bluewater shopping centre. Richard left Signet in 2002 to join us as a co-owner of the business bringing 25 years of jewellery retail experience to the business.
Natalie works in the business as a sales assistant as well as advising on the repair services that we offer. Natalie had worked for many years as a sales assistant in the Leslie Davis group (now Signet Group) where she first met Richard in the 1980's. Natalie is very experienced in all aspects of the business across both the retail, and workshop side.
Gemma Venus is our latest member of staff to join the business.
Gemma works in the business as a sales assistant and general customer service. Gemma has worked in jewellery retail since 2009 for both Goldsmiths, and Silver Lion Jewellers Exeter whilst studying for her degree.
Gemma is currently studying to become a trained gemmologist.
These are the main staff that you will see in the shop on a daily basis. We also have additional staff behind the scenes with different skills such as setting and engraving.
